How to Create a Training Course with SCORM, Tests, and Certificates

This article will cover a specific use case where the training course consists of several steps, each step containing a SCORM package as a type of attachment and a test. The final step includes a test with a certificate.

 

Creating a new training course

To create a new training course:

  1. Click the New training course button.
  2. Enter the Name of the training course.
  3. Enter a Description to provide additional information about the purpose or content of the training course.
  4. Click the Save button.

Upon completing these steps, the new training course will be saved in draft status, allowing you to continue customization. For more detailed instructions on how training courses are created, refer to this article.

Training course overview

Information

When creating or opening a training course, the Information enter the following details:

  1. Name – The name of the training course.
  2. Description – Additional information that explains the purpose or content of the training course.
  3. Unlock all steps at once –  Turn off this option to prevent candidates to move between training course steps. In this way, they can complete the training course only when they’ve successfully passed all the assignments for each step.
  4. Self-enrollment – Enable self-enrollment for the training course, granting accessibility to all users. This allows them to start the training course without needing prior manual assignment by the training course manager.
  5. Require confirmation for attachment review – Require candidates to confirm they have reviewed SCORM packages before proceeding to the next training course step. For more information, check this article.
  6. Hide assignment metadata – Simplify the My training courses page by displaying only essential information needed to start the training course. Exclude details such as assignment type, steps, and other non-essential information.
  7. Click the Save button.
  8. Select the Publish option if the training course is in Draft.

 

Training steps

Candidates must pass each training course step to complete the training course. Each training course step will include a SCORM package (which cannot be fast-forwarded) and a test.

1. Manually Creating a Step

  1. Click the Create new button to create a new training course step.
  2. When the pop-up window appears, enter the Training course step name.
  3. Provide additional information about the step in the Description field.
  4. Click the Save button.
  5. Repeat this process as many times as necessary.

2. Adding a Test to a Step

  1. Click the Add test button, then choose the option from the drop-down menu
  2. Assign existing test, check this article.
  3. Create an ad hoc test, check this article.

 

3. Adding a SCORM Package to a Step

  1. Click the create new attachment option
  2. In the pop-up window, type in:
    1. Name
    2. Description
    3. Choose the SCORM package as the attachment type
    4. Click the upload button
    5. Choose the index page from the drop-down menu
    6. Click the Save button.

In the screenshot below there are four training steps, each containing a SCORM package and a test. In case you want the candidate to be granted a certificate only if they successfully complete all the steps, you need to attach the certificate to the final test. Candidate’s Perspective

  1. When the candidate starts the training, they will first need to launch the SCORM module. They won’t be able to fast-forward or skip through it. To access the SCORM package, the candidate needs to click the eye icon.

Then, they need to click the play button.

After that, they will take a knowledge check to test what they have learned. Only if they pass the test will they be allowed to proceed to the next step, which follows the same principle. Once they successfully complete all the tests, they will receive a certificate attached to the final test in the final training step.
