How to Create Open-Ended Question

This article will explain the creation process of the Open-ended question type.

    Adding questions to a question pool

    1. Navigate to Tests/Question pool tab.
    2. Click the New button to add questions to a new pool.
      Once the pop-up window is shown:
    3. Enter the pool name.
    4. Enter the pool description optionally.
    5. Optionally select the workspaces for the question pool. For more information, please check out this article.
    6. You can decide whether you would want to generate questions using AI. For more information, please check out this article.
    7. Press the Save button.

     

    To add questions to an existing question pool, select the pool name from the list of pools.

    Open-ended question

    Single-choice questions present multiple answers, allowing the candidate to select only one.

    1. Go to the Questions tab to include a single-choice question in a newly created or existing question pool.
    2. Select the Add questions button and select the Open-ended option.
    3. Enter the question text.
    4. Enter the possible answer.
    5. Click on the Add to pool button to include the question in the pool’s list of questions.

    Configurable Sections

    The following fields are available when creating an open-ended question. You should briefly configure each without going into advanced detail unless required.

    1. Question Text

    Enter the prompt that the candidate will respond to. This should be clear and concise.

    2. Correct Answer (Optional)

    Optionally, provide a reference answer to guide graders.

    3. Grading and Duration Settings

    Select “Manual grading” from the scoring method dropdown. Open-ended questions must be graded manually.

    If desired, enable and select a Predefined Grading Template to ensure consistent evaluation across attempts.

    Branching Settings

    Define the next steps after this question is answered using one of the available branching modes.

    Customize the question’s behavior during test generation:

    • Tags: Use for better organization or searching.

    • Difficulty: Select from Easy, Medium, or Hard.

    • Frequency: Define how often this question appears in generated tests (Never, Rarely, Normal, Often, Always).

    Attach supporting materials, such as files or media, either from the library or by uploading a new one.
    You may also include attachments at the answer level, such as reference files, formulas, or instructions.

    Candidate’s Perspective

    When taking a test that includes an open-ended question, candidates will:

    • See a text box to type their answer.

    • Be note that the question requires manual grading.

    • Did not receive an immediate score for the question.

    • See a Help button if Assistance is enabled (which may result in a score deduction).

    This setup ensures clarity and provides a guided testing experience.
